What you need to remember is that Texas Hold’em poker is a game that any level of player can play. You can be a seasoned veteran or a first time player and either one of you could win. The whole game is based on betting. Sometimes you have to bet when you have nothing to win a pot others you bet with a big hand to build one. You can trap and allow the other player for you to bet by checking, or you can check when your hand is weak.
7-2 offsuit is the worst starting hand. Ace-Ace(A-A) is the best. There are 169 different combinations of hands so as a new player you generally only want to get into a hand with “Top 25 hands”. That means Jack-10 suited, 9-9, Jack-Queen suited, 10-10, and so on. Ace-Any face suited or not you’ll want to play for the most part.
The other big thing to realize is position. The “Blinds” are last to act before the flop but the dealer is last to act after it. When you are the dealer the range of hands you play vary in strength. This is because you are the last person to represent you have a hand. So even though you may not have a hand you can put a bet out representing that you have a least a pair.
Then there is betting. Betting is extremely complicated to an amateur player, be that you don’t know percentages and odds. ( I will include a link for you to reference at the end to help with everything) Hypothetically if you are the dealer and your hand is bad, really bad, but everyone called. This gives you an advantage to call. Any two cards can win so why not yours. You should call because it costs you relatively nothing to win a big pot.
Knowing what your tendencies are is one thing. Knowing your opponents is the key to success. The only way to improve is practice. So shuffle up and deal and may your cards be live and your pots be plenty!

To go down to the very basics:
You have players at the table. The one who deals is the dealer. The one to his left is the Small Blind (SB) and the next player is the Big Blind (BB). You need at least 2 players to play- SB and BB, here the BB is also the dealer.
The SB must pay his ante: half of the Big Blind. The BB must pay the full amount. Then the dealer gives every player two cards face down, the pocket cards.
The first betting round starts. The player to the left of the BB starts it. At the end of the betting round, the dealer places 3 cards face up on the table. This is called the flop (cards), these are community cards.
The second round of betting starts with the SB or the first to his left that is still in the round.
Then the dealer lays one more community card face up on the table. This is called the turn.
The next round of betting starts.
Then the dealer lays one more card down- face up. This is called the river.
Now the last and final betting round starts.
The player still standing or the player with the highest cards wins. If all players remaining show their cards in this round, it called a showdown.
The dealer may “burn” a card between each betting round. This means laying one down face down for no one to see.
I hope that this gives you a basic idea of how the game works. It is a very complex game but quite fun if you give it a chance.
Have fun and good luck!!
