In a tournament there is a buy-in, this is when all players enter a tournament for the same amount of money. In addition, the poker room or casino takes out an entry fee from all players entering the tournament. If the buy-in is $100 the house might take an extra $10, which means that the actual amount paid by the player is $110. If there are 100 players, the total prize pool will be 100 x $100 = $10,000. The payout structure depends on the tournament, but usually there is a prize for approximately every 10 players. In this case, it might be 30% for first place followed by 20%, 13%, 10%, 7%, 6%, 5%, 4%, 3%, and 2% respectively, thus making it 10 prizes in total.
In the tournament all players start out with an equal amount of chips and, as it progresses, the stakes are typically raised every 15-60 minutes. The amount of chips players begin with, the stakes and the time periods determine whether it is a fast or slow tournament. Good players generally prefer slow tournaments where you start out with a lot of chips.
In tournaments you want to win the last hand, and basically couldn’t care less about any hand before that.

Poker tournaments are all about one thing, winning. However to win you need to survive, there is no point having 50% of the chips for the entire tournament only to get knocked out in forth place just outside the paying places. To increase your chances of surviving until the end there are a number of tips and strategies you should learn and follow.
In this scenario we will be playing in a 10 player sit and go tournament.
Firstly and perhaps most importantly is knowing your odds and above all how these change depending upon the number of players still in the hand. If you have two aces against one other opponent then you have over 80% chance of winning the hand. With these odds it is always worth betting and betting hard.
These good odds can change dramatically when you add more players into the hand. With three players your odds could lower to around a 60% chance of winning. Add in a forth player and your odds of winning could drop to just above 50%. Okay so you still have a much better chance of winning than the other players but remember in the early stages it is about survival. You could go all in but to do so gives you a 50% chance of going out of the tournament at this early stage. There are a number of poker odds calculators around on the Internet so study them and work through a number of scenarios.
Surviving to the paying positions is perhaps more important than having a larger stack. As you get to the last four players the style of game play changes dramatically. At this point the player with the highest stack will usually call more hands then they should. The player with the lowest stack will usually get called more hands then they normally would. Players with average hands might call the player with the lowest stack in order to knock them out.
Following the example above, the odds of winning the hand for the player with the smallest stack are significantly reduced. However it also means that should they win their small stack can quadruple in size in one hand. If they survive a couple of hands like this then they could quickly become one of the leading players. Additionally the player with the largest stack could quickly lose his stack if he calls too many hands. Patience is the key here, again work out the odds and only call the hands that you should.

Raising big with very plain hands is sometimes a very effective method of varying your style of play to maintain the randomness and constant confusion that is imperative to playing Texas Hold Em Poker effectively. However, sometimes this strategy can be misguided if you are a very new beginner, and sticking to a more reliable strategy may be more appropriate if you haven’t exactly fine-tuned your game yet.
When you raise before the flop with a completely shocking hand, Like a 7-2 or 9-3, you main plan for doing this is to scare everyone off so you can steal the pot. You will get the small and big blind, and if you are lucky a bit of a small raise from someone infront of you, and these small gains can do wonders for slowly but surely building your stack. When you see pros do this, please understand they aren’t raising on the strength of the hole cards – there is no strength, in fact there is less then strength they are a burden – they are raising in an attempt to make a quick steal of the pot. If someone did call their raise, they are also confiding in pure luck to hit something on the flop. Because, for example, the person that called them would have great cards like A-K or K-Q or a very high pair, but the bluffer will have something like 6-2 or 7-3, so they are hoping the flop is mostly low cards so they pull maybe some pairs or a chance at a low straight. Get the picture?
This has added value because say for example you have a 6-3, quite poor cards, and you raise. You opponent calls and the flop comes out 7-5-4. For someone with A-A, K-K, or other premium cards this is a shocking flop. Because your opponent probably thinks you have good cards like this – why else would you raise so much? – they have almost no chance of putting you on the straight. This makes for a nasty surprise for them and enables you to make a grab at an even bigger portion of their stack.
Remember though, you don’t always make those lucky flops. The crux of the strategy is to scare people into folding early on so you can steal the small and big blinds, and maybe some ante’s if thats on the table. If this tips played properly, its not played all the time. Do not do it all the time or it won’t work properly. Vary your style of play to keep your opponents guessing, thats the best way to win Texas Hold Em Poker.
